In honor of the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles’ Grammy Award winning album Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band we will screen three Beatles films from the band’s psychedelic and post-psychedelic eras. There will be a short lecture before the screenings and a brief Q & A period after the screenings with Beatles enthusiast Lincoln Richman. And free popcorn!!!
Thursday, May 4, 2017: Magical Mystery Tour (60 minutes)
This made-for-television Beatles movie debuted on English television in December, 1967. Critics were not kind to this self-produced, largely improvised film. But since 1967, Magical Mystery Tour has become a cult curiosity. Classic songs include “I Am the Walrus” and “Your Mother Should Know.”
Thursday, May 11, 2017: Yellow Submarine (87 minutes)
Based largely on the music of the Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and other Beatles tracks, this 1968 animated feature has become a classic film adored by adults and children alike. Using psychedelic animation techniques that had been newly invented, the film includes classic songs “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” and “All You Need is Love.”
Thursday, May 18, 2017: Let it Be (80 minutes)
Moving away from their psychedelic experiments, the Beatles – heavily influenced by the album Music from Big Pink by Robbie Robertson and The Band – sought to get back to their musical roots with a stripped down, no-frills rock-n-roll album. This rarely seen documentary film shows the Beatles in their final hours together before their breakup – sometimes bickering, sometimes disinterested in each other, but still making great music! Classic songs include “Get Back,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “Across the Universe,” and, of course, “Let it Be.”
