Robert Moses was a city planner who worked mainly in the New York Metropolitan area. He is known as the “master builder” of mid-20th century New York City and Long Island. Moses is sometimes compared to Baron Haussmann of Second Empire Paris, and was one of the most polarizing figures in the history of urban planning in the United States. Bob Galante will discuss how Moses’ strong personality (my way or the highway) and the right of eminent domain played a significant role in changing the New York Metropolitan area landscape. Discussion will also include eminent domain examples today.
Robert Moses was also the brains and impetus behind the two New York World’s Fairs in 1939 and 1964. These will be covered by the speaker as well.
